FigurativeExpressionism.com - Art Gallery - By the Lowest-Paid Member of the Art Department by Leonel Gongora

Title:  By the Lowest-Paid Member of the Art Department (1977)

acrylic on paper - 60"H x 36"W

Biography: 1932 - 1998

Leonel Gongora was born in Cartago, Colombia on December 19, 1932 and studied at Escuela de Bellas Artes, Bogota, Colombia and Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri.  In 1959 he traveled to Europe, living in Italy and from 1960 to 1963 he lived in Mexico City.  Gongora, an original Rhino Horn artist, often considered himself the ghost of the Spanish legend "The Secret Painter", who "left virgins painted, seduced and abandoned in every village and town".  Some of his works are frankly erotic and even the more conventional groupings of men and women express through his artistry the pleasures of love.  International shows include: "New Humanism in drawings from Italy, USA, and Mexico", University of Mexico City.  Collections include: the University of Mass., Amherst where he taught for many years.
